IMPORTANT GUITAR TRICKS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Playing guitar is not about just learning how to play and learning the basic of it, it is all about improving, learning and mastering the art of music in your own unique approach and interpretation. There are many ways to advance your basic knowledge and skills in guitar playing. One of the tricks you must learn is the following:

HAMMER-ON

A HAMMER-ON is used in 'legato' playing, It is a way of seamlessly connecting two notes simultaneously by which the key or the first note is fretted and picked, the second note is produced by hammering a different left-hand finger on the same string hammering one, two, three or four frets higher. A good hammer-on depends on the speed and accuracy of your finger used in hammering.

SLIDE

Glissando is the musical term for a slide. A SLIDE is done by picking a note from one fret sliding to another fret. It really does not matter how far you are going to do a slide as long as you're sliding on the correct note.

PULL-OFF

Like the HAMMER-ON, a PULL-OFF is used in 'legato' playing that is also used in connecting two notes simultaneously or continuously. A pull-off is done by fretting a string on two frets at the same time and picking the string. Then, the finger from the higher fret will do the pull-off by pulling down the note and releasing it to produce a ring sound.

VIBRATO

VIBRATO is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch that simply means to vibrate. Vibrato can be done by wiggling your finger or fingers up or down using your wrist then returning to its original note position. One type of vibrato is the CLASSICAL VIBRATO; this is done by wiggling your finger side to side. This type of vibrato needs a lot of pressure to perform well.

PALM MUTING

PALM MUTING simply means killing the sustain of the string/s in the guitar by using your right-hand palm having a contact in the strings fairly next to the bridge. The three lower strings are affected by this effect. You can use palm muting in any ways that you want to, either before hitting a note/s or after hitting a note/s.

PALM HARMONIC

PALM HARMONIC is one of the coolest tricks that you can apply on a guitar/electric guitar. Palm harmonic is making an artificial sound of a true harmonic sound. This is done by simply touching the side of your palm running from the bridge heading to the fretboard or from the fretboard getting back to the bridge while your left hand is doing some scales or licks.

PINCHED HARMONIC

PINCHED HARMONIC is another artificial harmonic trick like palm harmonic, it uses the picking plus thumb combo by which after picking the string, the thumb will follow by slightly touching the string  to create harmonic sound.

SWEEP PICKING

SWEEP PICKING is a combination of continuous picking and palm muting at the same time. Commonly a chord shape can be played by using this trick. However, this chord shape will not be fretted as a regular chord, it needs to pick note by note  in a downstroke or upstroke picking while muting it by your palm, avoiding the notes to give too much ringing.

TREMOLO PICKING

TREMOLO PICKING is simply picking the string up and down rapidly depending on the speed you wanted. You can practice this trick little by little until you achieve the maximum speed you want with accuracy.

TAPPING

TAPPING is done by simply hammering a note on the fret followed by a downward motion finger. Tapping can be two-handed tapping or one- handed tapping.

VOLUME SWELL

VOLUME SWELL from the word itself means "to increase in volume", by which after picking a chord or note/s, a sudden increase of volume will be applied.
