THE IMPORTANCE OF BAND JAM SESSIONS
A cool and smart thing to practice as an
instrumentalist is to do regular jam sessions; it is one of the better
ways to improve your musical skills. In this way, you can easily jive to
the different type of instrumentalist styles and approach in playing and you can broaden your knowledge in exchanging techniques and tricks in playing
instruments. It will bring the best of you through thinking good ideas for the
musical arrangement. As a guitar player, I use to have jam sessions or
rehearsals with different bands and instrumentalist in different places. This
is the way of communicating my styles to theirs as most of us instrumentalist
have different styles in playing. In addition, this will also boost your
self-confidence as a musician and the "floor is yours" idea is there
to show off your skills.
As you go along with your jam sessions, you
are also building friendship and happiness with other people, meaning, your
session/s will always be enjoyable, full of fun and full of excitement. Always
remember, creating a clean and good quality music sounds depend on the harmony
of the band. In addition, be humble; do not be like other people who seem
to know everything. Giving ideas is much better in providing the best sound
quality possible; it will let your brain function, exercise, and come up with
the most brilliant idea possible to contribute in your jam session/s.
In other countries, jam session/s is the gathering
of musicians after their paid gig/s. They will gather in one place and they
will play along with each other. However, there are musicians that wanted to
play alone with their best unique styles of playing. In the Philippines, jam
session/s happens anywhere, anytime and in any occasion/s. You will see jam
session/s on the street, at the park, at the mall, at the church, parking area,
birthday celebration, reunion, or even just in a simple get together. Band
collaboration and band member swapping are also common. Unlike other
countries, Philippine musician/s, instrumentalist and player/s want to be in a
group or a band rather than going as a soloist. They always want to get along
with each other like brothers and sisters.
To summarize, jam session/s is playing, learning, and
enjoying, a complete package that every instrumentalist will have the benefits
of it. Get out of your comfort zone and let us play together! Let your skills
develop and show off some confidence. Do not be such a loner instrumentalist.
Remember that no man is an Island. If you want to improve more in your playing,
then you need to go.
