7 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR GUITAR PICKING SPEED AND ACCURACY

Building up your guitar picking speed and accuracy is not a blink of an eye; it will take a lot of your time, patience, and hard work to achieve the peak of your desire guitar picking mastery.  Many guitar players are lacking this skill, some of them play inappropriately with different ways and approach, and some do the faking trick to hide the truth. Therefore, here are theseven effective ways to improve your guitar picking speed and accuracy:

1.  HANDS AND ARMS STRETCHING

Hands and arms stretching are the top important routine before starting a session or a guitar practice; it can help to avoid finger injury and can help you to be more relax while playing. Arms’ stretching is doing a simple continuous shaking of the arms going to the hands, while hands stretching is pressing, clenching and pushing each part in between your fingers against the back of the neck of the guitar.

2. PROPER PICK HOLDING AND ALTERNATE PICKING TECHNIQUE

Proper pick holding and alternate picking are one of the keys to increasing your guitar picking speed and accuracy; it means you need to hold the pick between your thumb and index finger with the pointed end facing toward the strings. You strictly use alternating down and up strokes.

3. PICKING EACH NOTE CLEARLY AND ACCURATELY WITH PROPER FINGERING

Picking the notes clearly and accurately is one of the biggest problems of many guitarists; it reflects the output and quality of your sound, especially if you miss to strike even one single note and your fretting hand is not following up with your picking hand. The trick is to look after your fingering in the fretboard and you are alternately picking at the same time in a slow phase.

  

4. USE OF METRONOME  

The use of metronome will help you to get you into proper timing and proper speed. Try using this in a very slow four-beat tempo for your start up and warm up. It is strongly recommend using musical scales pattern, it will serve as your reference not only in practicing your speed but also in memorizing your fretboard notes. Once you are convinced that you have done it smoothly, that is the time you will increase the tempo and beat of your metronome.

5. TIME

6. MAKE USE OF A VIDEO AND AUDIO RECORDER

Using a video and an audio recorder will help you to see yourself when you practice, it will serve as your channel of improvement, and a reflection of where you stand in your progress. Eventually, once you reach your goal, you can look back on those video for comparison.
