RIFF,AD-LIB, SOLO,AND INSTRUMENTAL
The "Riff" or
"Ostinato" in music is a short repeated phrase of melodies, chord
progression, chords pattern, and usually played by a rhythmic instrument; it is
often used as an intro at the beginning of a song or musical piece. The riff
served as the life support of a musical composition, it will make sure that the
melodies will continue and not die abruptly. In addition, a riff is also
present in every transition before and after the verse begins, before the
chorus, after the chorus going back to the verse and sometimes served as an
ending part. Like in the song Sweet child of mine by Guns N Roses, you will
notice that the riff is always repeated, mostly in every part of the song. The
riff can give detail to a song or musical composition that is very easy to
remember. Songs and musical composition with cool riff are the most likely to
get attention from the listener, the cooler the riff the famous it will be.
However, there are more components in a song or musical composition. The
components like the “fill in”, the ad-lib or the solo, and the instrumental are
also the keys to making a song or composition famous.
The “fill in” in music is a short
passage or phrase made up of melodic notes usually found in the body or the
verse of a song or composition. It serves as a follow-up in between
chordal, melodic, and vocal rest. Sometimes guitar player’s calls fill in as
add-ons, because of its particular usage and importance to making the
beautification of the song and composition arrangement.
The “ad-lib” in music is an
improvised musical arrangement played solo, altogether, and alternation of
different musical instruments. The ad-lib is played right after the chorus of a
song or composition. The solo is the one that gives emphasis in the
ad-lib part, it is made up of different notes from a particular musical scale;
it uses different playing techniques and approach to display or highlights the
improvised melodies.
The “instrumental” in musical may
refer to a musical composition, it is made up solely of pure musical instruments;
an orchestra is one example of pure musical instruments performance. The
instrumental is very particular to the blending of different sounds and
melodies produced by different instruments, it focuses on the timing, tempo,
rest, dynamics, climax, repetition, and the ending of the composition.
